The former Ingersoll Dinner Theater at 3711 Ingersoll Ave. is being renovated into a multi-use facility that will be primarily a Caribbean-themed restaurant and dance lounge. Copa Cavana will specialize in Cuban foods and will have a lounge with Latin American dancing such as salsa, tango and merengue with live and DJ music. Live shows, theater groups and free dance lessons will also be on the venue.

The coffee shop on the corner of the block, formerly the Black Cat, is closed now, but it’s also undergoing renovation and will become Cafe Cavana, a coffee shop featuring beans from Panama.

Business partners Ankur Amin and Faisal Samara are pushing to open in time for a New Year’s Eve grand opening party, but if that deadline isn’t met, Amin said the next projected opening is by mid-January.

Samara, whose background is Nicaraguan and Middle Eastern, will be the head chef for the restaurant. Amin, who is of Indian descent, will be general manager.

The two have been working on plans for the site for more than one year, but lack of adequate parking delayed progress. Acquisition of the coffee shop and a vacant gas station to the east of the coffee shop, plus an arrangement for parking across the street from the restaurant and lounge solved that issue.
